35 Bible Verses for Anxiety and Overthinking

Apr 3, 2026 | Bible verses | 0 comments

Hey there,

I want to start with something personal. After I gave birth, I expected to feel this overwhelming wave of happiness. That’s what everyone talks about, right? But what I felt instead was fog. A heavy, suffocating fog that made it hard to get out of bed, hard to think straight, and impossible to quiet my mind.

Postpartum depression hit me slowly, and then all at once. The overthinking was the worst part. I would replay conversations, worry about things I couldn’t control, and spiral into fears at 2 am that felt completely real and completely terrifying. I felt alone in it, even when I wasn’t.

Getting through that season took time, support, and — for me — a lot of prayer and time in Scripture. I’m not saying the Bible fixed everything overnight. It didn’t. But these verses became anchors for me on the days when my mind was a storm.

If you’re in a place right now where anxiety or overthinking feels like it’s running your life, I want to share 35 Bible verses that genuinely helped me. Whether you’re going through something big or just stuck in that exhausting loop of ‘what ifs’, I hope these words bring you some peace today.

(And a gentle note before we dive in: if you’re struggling with your mental health, please also reach out to a therapist or doctor. Faith and professional support go hand in hand — there is no shame in getting help.)

When You’re Overwhelmed and Can’t Stop Worrying

Sometimes the worry just doesn’t stop. These verses speak directly into that exhausted, anxious place.

Philippians 4:6–7
“In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.”

Matthew 6:34
“Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.”

1 Peter 5:7
“casting all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.”

Psalm 55:22
“Cast your burden on Yahweh, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.”

Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Proverbs 12:25
“Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad.”

Luke 12:25
“Which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his height?”

That last one always gets me. Worrying doesn’t add a single thing to our lives — but it sure takes a lot away.

When Fear Takes Over

Anxiety and fear often travel together. When fear feels bigger than everything else, these are the verses I turn to.

Isaiah 41:10
“Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.”

2 Timothy 1:7
“For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.”

Joshua 1:9
“Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.”

Psalm 34:4
“I sought Yahweh, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.”

John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.”

Isaiah 43:1
“But now Yahweh who created you, Jacob, and he who formed you, Israel, says: ‘Don’t be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name. You are mine.'”

Deuteronomy 31:6
“Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

“You are mine.” Every time I read Isaiah 43:1, something in me settles. You belong to Someone who is not afraid of anything.

When Your Mind Won’t Quiet Down (Overthinking)

Overthinking is exhausting. These verses are specifically about our thought lives — and how we can redirect our minds intentionally.

Philippians 4:8

“Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

Romans 12:2

“Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Isaiah 26:3

“You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.”

2 Corinthians 10:5

“…bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”

Romans 8:6

“For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace.”

Proverbs 4:23

“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.”

Colossians 3:2

“Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth.”

Philippians 4:8 is one I actually keep on a sticky note. When I notice myself spiraling, I read it and try to redirect my thoughts to something true, something lovely, literally. It takes practice — but it works.

When You Feel Alone in Your Struggle

One of the sneakiest lies anxiety tells us is that we’re alone in it. These verses remind us that we are never, ever abandoned.

Psalm 23:4
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Hebrews 13:5
“…for he has said, ‘I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.'”

Psalm 46:1
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

Zephaniah 3:17
“Yahweh, your God, is among you, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing.”

Lamentations 3:22–23
“It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Romans 8:38–39
“For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Lamentations 3:22–23 got me through so many hard mornings. Every single morning is a fresh start. His mercies don’t run out.

Finding Peace and Trusting God’s Plan

When anxiety makes us want to control everything, these verses invite us into surrender — and into a peace that doesn’t depend on our circumstances.

Proverbs 3:5–6
“Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Isaiah 40:31
“But those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.”

Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God…”

Romans 15:13
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.”

John 16:33
“…In me you may have peace. In the world you have oppression; but cheer up! I have overcome the world.”

Isaiah 41:13
“For I, Yahweh your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I will help you.'”

Matthew 6:33
“But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.”

“Be still, and know that I am God.” Sometimes anxiety disappears — not because we fought it hard enough — but because we finally stopped and let God be God.

Final Thoughts

If you made it all the way here, I want you to know something: healing is not a straight line. Some days these verses will feel like a lifeline. Other days, they’ll be hard to believe. Both of those days are okay.

For me, Isaiah 41:10 was the one I clung to most during my postpartum season. “I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you.” On the days when I had no strength left, that ‘yes’ felt like a promise made just for me.

I also want to say again — gently but clearly — that if you are in a really dark place, please talk to someone. A therapist, a doctor, a trusted friend. Mental health care is not a lack of faith. It’s wisdom. God can work through all of it.

Which of these verses speaks to your heart the most today? I’d love to hear in the comments below. And if this post helped you, share it with a friend who might need it too.
